Abstract:
Power Electronic Building Blocks (PEBBs) have been introduced to take advantage of the similarities in power electronic topologies to increase efficiency and to decrease cost and maintenance. Parameters such as reliability, power capacity and packaging density can be adversely affected by elevated temperatures in compact electronic packing. In this work, a sharp-interface immersed-boundary flow simulation technique is employed to study the heat distribution in different PEBB array configurations foran effective thermal management solution. The study focuses on the external temperature and flow fields of the PEBB array where a 100kW power block with 98% conversion efficiency built with SiC technology is considered as a building block. The flow field and temperature field around the array is calculated and a relation between gap width and Nusselt number is determined from the flow and temperature field results. It has been shown that the geometrical and kinematic parameters of the system play a crucial in selection of a practical thermal management technique.
