Effect of Roof Material and Diurnal Heating on Pollution Dispersion in an Urban Canopy

In urban areas, human respiratory problems have constantly been linked to the poor air quality of the region. In order to ensure an efficient and effective urban design, the effect of air circulation and stagnation on pollutant ventilation, under realistic urban microclimate, needs to be carefully investigated. In this study, we use computational modeling to investigate the effect of diurnal heating, atmospheric stability, turbulent intensity, and roof type/material (including green and reflective roofs) on aerothermodynamics of the urban air flow and pollution dispersion. The computational modeling effort engages a three-dimensional detailed urban energy budget simulator that provides realistic, spatiotemporal variable thermal forces for a large-eddy simulation.
