Abstract:
This study consists of a canonical benchmark numerical and experimental study to understand the interaction between a separation bubble and compliant surface. Through adjusting the compliance of an elastic membrane spanning the separation region, the separation bubble dynamics are examined and the interplay between the flow-induced surface motion and the unsteady fluid pressure loads are investigated. Numerical simulations are utilized to explore the region of interest and provide preliminary knowledge to the system, while experimental data collected through particle image velocimetry (PIV) are analyzed to extract the characteristics of both the separation bubble an the complaint surface. This research aims to improve the understanding of unsteady separation bubble dynamics. By gaining insight into the unsteady dynamics of separation we seek to pave a path for future controller schemes for the present case.
