Biography

Hi, I’m Kari Johnson, a researcher at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. My project investigates the effects of hydrogen aging on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the ALA6 alloy, a multi-component structural material designed to resist hydrogen embrittlement. Using microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM) and X-ray diffraction, I characterize changes in hardness, fracture toughness, and crystal structure after exposure to high-pressure hydrogen at elevated temperatures. Results show increased hardness with minimal reduction in fracture toughness, hydride formation, and localized cracking near zirconium-rich grain boundaries. Future work involves further microstructural analysis to understand the mechanisms of hydrogen interaction with ALA6.
